This article covers changing your outgoing SMTP port number in your mail program. Many mail programs try to use port 25 for outgoing mail by default but in most cases that will not work correctly as many ISP’s have begun blocking access to port 25 to help control spam.
Follow the instructions below to change your outgoing SMTP port number and enable SMTP authentication.
Please note: Do NOT change the incoming port number.
Microsoft Outlook
-Click on the “File” menu, click on “Account Settings”, and from the dropdown menu select “Manage Profiles“
-Click on “Email Accounts”
-Select your e-mail account, then click “Change”
-Click on the More Settings button
-Click on the “Advanced” tab
-Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to 465
-The “Use the following type of encrypted connection” setting should be set to “SSL/TLS”
-Click on the “Outgoing Server” tab
-Check the box labeled “My server requires authentication” and make sure it’s set to “Use same settings as incoming mail server”and click “OK”
-Click “Next” and then “Finish” to save your changes.
-Click on “Email Accounts”
-Select your e-mail account, then click “Change”
-Click on the More Settings button
-Click on the “Advanced” tab
-Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to 465
-The “Use the following type of encrypted connection” setting should be set to “SSL/TLS”
-Click on the “Outgoing Server” tab
-Check the box labeled “My server requires authentication” and make sure it’s set to “Use same settings as incoming mail server”and click “OK”
-Click “Next” and then “Finish” to save your changes.
Outlook for Mac
-Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Accounts”
-Highlight your email account in the left column
-Check the box labeled “Override default port” beneath the outgoing mail server
-Change the outgoing mail server port to 465
-Make sure the checkbox labeled “Use SSL to connect” is checked
-Click on “More Options” and set the “Authentication” field to “Use incoming server info”
-Close the window to save your changes.
-Highlight your email account in the left column
-Check the box labeled “Override default port” beneath the outgoing mail server
-Change the outgoing mail server port to 465
-Make sure the checkbox labeled “Use SSL to connect” is checked
-Click on “More Options” and set the “Authentication” field to “Use incoming server info”
-Close the window to save your changes.
Apple Mail
-Go to the Mail menu and choose Preferences.
-Click on the “Accounts” icon and then highlight your e-mail account
-Click on the “Server Settings” tab
-In the “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)” section, uncheck the box labeled “Automatically manage connection settings”
-Enter your username and password for your email account. This information is the same your incoming login information.
-Set the outgoing server port to 465
-Make sure “Authentication” is set to “Password”
-Check the box for “Use TLS/SSL”
-Click on the “Accounts” icon and then highlight your e-mail account
-Click on the “Server Settings” tab
-In the “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)” section, uncheck the box labeled “Automatically manage connection settings”
-Enter your username and password for your email account. This information is the same your incoming login information.
-Set the outgoing server port to 465
-Make sure “Authentication” is set to “Password”
-Check the box for “Use TLS/SSL”
iPhone/iPad
-Click/tap on “Settings” and select “Mail”
-Tap on your mail account
-Tap on the Outgoing (SMTP) server name
-Your mail server should be listed as the “Primary Server”. Tap on it again to view the advanced settings.
-Enter your email username and password
-Click on “Authentication” and make sure “Password” is selected.
-Change the server port to 465
-Make sure “Use SSL” is set to “On”
-Click “Done” to save your changes.
-Tap on your mail account
-Tap on the Outgoing (SMTP) server name
-Your mail server should be listed as the “Primary Server”. Tap on it again to view the advanced settings.
-Enter your email username and password
-Click on “Authentication” and make sure “Password” is selected.
-Change the server port to 465
-Make sure “Use SSL” is set to “On”
-Click “Done” to save your changes.
Mozilla Thunderbird
-Open Thunderbird. Click the “Tools” menu and select “Account Settings”.
-Select “Outgoing server” in the left column.
-Highlight your outgoing mail server and click “Edit”
-Change the Outgoing server port to 465
-Set the Connection Security option to “SSL” and then set the Authentication Method to “Password, transmitted insecurely”.
-Enter your username. Your email username is your full email address.
-Click OK to save your changes.
Eudora OSE
1) Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Account Settings”
2) Select “Outgoing Mail Server” in the left column
3) Highlight your outgoing mail server and select “Edit”
4) Change the server port to 587
5) Check “Use name and password” and enter your email username
6) Make sure “Connection Security” is set to “None”
7) Click OK
