Troubleshooting a POP/IMAP email account

The following article explains how to verify that you are using the correct email settings for your POP or IMAP email account.

First, find your email settings here: https://estreet.com/email-lookup/

Once you have your settings you can select your email application from the list below.

Microsoft Outlook
-Click on the “File” tab in Outlook

-Click on the “Account Settings” icon and select “Manage Profiles

-Click on “Email Accounts

-Double click on your email account to view your settings

-Make sure you have the correct Username, Incoming server, and Outgoing server listed. You can find the correct settings here:

-Now click on “More Settings

-On the “Outgoing Server” tab make sure the box labeled “My outgoing server requires authentication is checked.

-Now click on the “Advanced” tab and check the port/SSL settings. SSL should be enabled for both incoming and outgoing mail.

-If you’re using an IMAP configuration then the incoming port should be 993.
-If you’re using a POP configuration then the incoming port should be 995.

-The Outgoing SMTP port should be set to 465.

-Click OK, then Next, then Finish to save your changes.
Outlook for Mac
-Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Accounts

-Select your email account in the left pane

-Now check the following settings. You can find the correct settings here:

User name: your full email address
Password: your email password
Incoming server: your incoming mail server
Use SSL to connect: Checked
Outgoing server: your outgoing mail server
Use SSL to connect: Checked

-Do NOT check the “Override default port” boxes. The default ports should be used.

-Click “Save” to save your changes
Apple Mail
-Click on the “Mail” menu and select “Settings” (or in older versions of Mail select “Preferences“)

-Highlight your email account in the left pane and then click on the “Server Settings” tab

-Verify/change the following settings. You can find the correct settings here:

Incoming Mail Server
User Name: your full email address
Password: your email password
Automatically manage connection settings: Unchecked
Use TSL/SSL: Checked
Port: 995 if using a POP account, 993 if using an IMAP account
Authentication: Password

Outgoing Mail Server
User Name: your full email address
Password: your email password
Automatically manage connection settings: Unchecked
Use TSL/SSL: Checked
Port: 465
Authentication: Password

-Click “Save” to save your changes.
iOS devices (iPad/iPhone)
-Click/tap on the “Settings” icon to get started.
 
-Tap on “Accounts and Passwords”  (or on older versions of iOS you’ll tap on “Mail, Contacts, and Calendars” instead)

-Tap on your email account to open the settings

-Verify/change the following settings. You can find the correct settings here: https://estreet.com/email-lookup/

Host Name: your incoming server name
Username:  your full email address
Password:  your email password 

-Now click on the “Advanced” tab and check the following settings:

Use SSL:  On
Authentication:  Password or MD5 Challenge Response
Server port:  993*

*993 is the incoming port for an IMAP account, which is the protocol that iOS uses by default. However if you are using a POP configuration then your incoming port would be 995 instead.

-Scroll down and tap on the name of your outgoing mail server.
Your outgoing mail server should be listed as the “Primary Server”. Tap on the server name again to view the settings.

-Now verify/change the following settings:

Host Name: your outgoing server name
Username:  your full email address
Password:  your email password 
Use SSL:  On
Authentication:  Password or MD5 Challenge Response
Server port:  465

-Click “Done” to save your changes.


Outlook for Android
-If your email account is not working properly in Outlook for Android then you will need to delete the account and re-add it.

-In the Outlook app, tap on the icon in the top upper-left corner of the app window.

-Now tap the gear icon in the lower-left corner

-Tap on your email account and select “Delete Account

-Now tap “Add Mail Account” and select “Add email account

-Enter your full email address and tap “Continue

-Select “IMAP” as the account type

-Tap the “Advanced Settings” button to toggle it into the on position

-Enter the following settings. You can find the correct settings here:

Display Name: your full name
Description: your full email address

IMAP Host Name: your incoming server name
Port: 993
Security Type: SSL/TLS
IMAP Username: your full email address
IMAP Password: your email password

SMTP Host Name: your outgoing server name
Port: 465
Security Type: SSL/TLS
SMTP Username: your full email address
SMTP Password: your email password

-Once all of the settings have been entered, click the checkmark icon in the upper-right to save the account.

Thunderbird
-Click on the menu in the upper-right (typically represented by three horizontal lines) and open “Account Settings” from that menu.

-Click on “Server Settings” underneath your email account in the left pane.

-Verify/change the following settings. You can find the correct settings here:

Server Name: your incoming server name
Port: Keep the default port number
User name: your full email address

Connection Security:
Authentication Method: Encrypted Password

-Now click on the “Outgoing Server (SMTP)” section in the left pane

-Highlight the outgoing server used by your account and click “Edit

-Verify/change the following settings. You can find the correct settings here:

Server Name: your incoming server name
Port: Keep the default port number
Connection Security:
Authentication Method: Encrypted Password
User Name: your full email address

-Click OK then close the Account Settings tab to save your changes.
