What is a winmail.dat file

When using some Microsoft e-mail programs to send mail (Exchange, Outlook, Outlook Express), images you place in the message are not seen by the recipients, instead they see a winmail.dat attachment. This is because the recipient’s e-mail program does not support RTF, or Rich Text Format. RTF is used to format e-mail messages so you can view the images as part of the message.
