What is an SSL Certificate and How Does it Work?

What is an SSL Certificate and How Does it Work?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It’s a protocol used to encrypt and authenticate the data sent between an application (like your browser) and a web server.  This leads to a more secure web for both you and the visitors to your website.  In fact, Google has imposed indicators on sites that are not SSL enabled with the “not secure” icon: https://www.blog.google/products/chrome/milestone-chrome-security-marking-http-not-secure/

SSL is closely tied to another acronym – TLS. TLS, short for Transport Layer Security, is the successor and more up-to-date version of the original SSL protocol.

How do I tell if I am using SSL?

The easiest way to see if a website is using SSL/TLS is to look at your browser. The URL will usually start with “https ://” and most all browsers mark secure connections with a green padlock and/or a message. For example, in Google Chrome, you can look for a green padlock and the Secure message. Also in the Google Chrome brwosers you may see a  “not secure” icon if the site is not enabled.
